2016 Giant Defy Advanced Pro 1 : Dark Silver/ Black/Yellow

Season:2016

Brand:Giant

Code:601032

Giant have a very purist approach to frame design. Unlike others using split frame design or frame inserts to achieve compliance or force distribution etc, Giant's is a Pure Engineering approach and they have created a range of frames that out-perform the competition across the board, from stiffness and weight to compliance and strength.

Giant are in the business of creating high quality product that displays genuine value for money. To this end, their Advanced Pro ranges of carbon bikes - be that Defy, TCR or Propel - all use the high grade (and indeed benchmark) Torayca Carbon fibre married to high quality resins, in processes that they control from start to finish. The result is a range of the finest quality carbon bikes on the market.

Re-designed last season, the Defy Advanced Pro series retains the upgraded Torayca T700 carbon frameset of last year which it shares with it's little brother; the Advanced. The difference between the two ranges is small but significant. The Advanced Pro range features a full carbon fork with carbon steerer (rather than aluminium) which makes for a more direct feeling front end and which also shaves weight from the bike. This fork also features Giant's Overdrive 2 headtube which uses a 11/4" upper bearing and a 11/2" lower for exceptional handling and responsiveness. In addition, all Advanced Pro models feature Giants new saddles as developed with the Pro Team; upgraded finishing kit and Giant's own wheel systems with hub internals manufactured by DT Swiss for greater performance and longevity. Strong component selection at each price point in the Pro range make these ideal for those investing a lot of time in the saddle and who are keen sportive or endurance riders. This Defy Advanced Pro 1 is the bike for those looking for an electronic groupset to handle the rigours of their endurance riding. Shimano's Ultegra Di2 is tried and tested and will yield effortless shifts mile after mile, rain or shine. Braking is handled by RS785 hydraulic discs for enhanced stopping in any and all conditions. The brake's graduated lever feel ensures that you don't launch yourself and the modulation is superb offering handfuls of control.

This season Giant have upped their game at this price and provide their own hoops in the form of their 35mm full carbon clincher SLR1. Giant's wheels are manufactured in-house from only the highest grades of fibre and in collaboration with their long-term partner DT Swiss. Giant design the wheel system from rim to lacing pattern and DT supply the Hub internals, like the Star Ratchet freehub system, and spokes. The wheels aren't just another hop on the carbon band-wagon though. Giant have developed a proprietary lacing they call Dynamic Balance Lacing, whereby there is not only different tension between drive and non-drive spokes but also between the 'Pushin' and 'Pulling' spokes on the Drive side itself. Giant claim that this Dynamic system allows for better transmission of the drive forces for greater balance, power transfer and longevity. All good things we think you'd agree!

The combination of components and Giant's new wheel set makes the Defy Advanced Pro 1 a very serious proposition indeed. There is little to want for and the asking price is more than reasonable.

Engineered for real world performance, even on rough roads and the longest days. The Advanced grade composite frame features endurance geometry with the perfect blend of light weight, stiffness and road smoothing compliance. The OverDrive 2 steerer tube and full composite fork work together to boost front end stiffness and precision. New disc brake technology and the vibration damping D-Fuse seatpost enhance control and comfort. The PowerCore bottom bracket turns every pedal stroke into positive forward motion, helping you stay strong all the way to the finish.

I am a returnee to cycling and am 70 years of age. Before buying the Defy Advanced Pro 1 I used a Defy Advanced 2. The first thing to say is that I like both bikes and use them regularly. Now the nitty gritty about the Defy Advanced Pro 1. The pros are endless and include the following. 1. Full Carbon fiber frame and forks. 2. Full carbon fiber wheel rims. 3. Shimano Ultegra gear set with Di2 electronic gear shifting. 4. Not as light as some but still very competitive in this department. 5. Beautifully finished and a classy colour scheme. 6. Hydraulic disc brakes. (A must in my opinion). Riding the bike is easy and very reassuring. The steering is responsive and precise. The brakes are an absolute delight. They are ultra light in operation and totally predictable in all weathers. There is no need to second guess whether or not they will stop you in time they just do. I will admit that the light weight did worry me a little because of the high winds in the area where I live but after an initial test ride in cross winds I found that the bike almost seemed to lean into the wind by itself. I know this is not the case but any correction needed caused by the wind was totally effortless. Now the gears. After experiencing this set up I would not consider any other type of gear set or change mechanism. I would suggest however that Giant should offer a secondary cassette. The standard 11-28 may well be OK but I had mine changed for an 11-32 (again all included in the price) which gave me the advantage of the high gear push with the added luxury of a lower gear availability for going up steeper hills. At my age a definite bonus. I also had extra gear shifters fitted (at an extra cost of £145:00). These are positioned on the top of the handle bars about three inches either side of centre. The difference these have made is unbelievable and I can only say if you are considering electronic gear shifting please consider these extra shifters. With them fitted you always have a shifter where your hand is no matter where you hold the handle bars. One "problem" has been highlighted by other reviewers concerning the standard shifters behind the brake levers that being that they are too close to each other. I have used mine extensively now and would tend to agree but use familiarises you with their positioning and you soon get used to them even in gloves which I use most of the time. Battery life for the electronics is long. Because of my age I tend to change down a gear or two rather than coping by leg strength in the gear I am in and my batteries still show fully charged after four hundred miles and the gear change is still instantaneous and faultless. All in all I love this bike and would whole heartedly recommend it to any body.
