Silca : Cycling Passion, Precision and Performance
Silca's legendary craftsmanship has long
been appreciated by generations of cyclists and they have always been an
aspirational product.
In 1917 Felice Sacchi founded SILCA just
outside of Milan, Italy. The aim of Felice’s company was to produce bicycle
pumps of unrivalled quality that would perform beautifully for years.
Sacchi’s approach seems almost alien with
today’s proliferation of mass-produced, price-focused goods that, more often
than not, do a mediocre job for a short period of time.
Silca operated out of a desire to create
the perfect pump, not only beautiful but supremely functional. Manufactured
from the finest components and built with care and attention to detail that
stem from pride and passion. If you are a fervent cycling fan then you may know
of Silca – you may own a Silca pump, and if you do, you probably love it.
By 2013 Silca were the oldest company in
the bicycle industry to have been continually owned by the same family. Sadly,
the failing health of Claudio, Felice’s Grandson and a market with a dwindling
appreciation of quality, meant that the company needed to be sold.
Sharing the same values as the Sacchi
family and promising to honour the marque, the company was purchased by Josh
Poertner, previously Technical Director at Zipp in Indianapolis, where Silca is
now based.
Josh is keen to revive the quality-first
approach. Creating a new market within a very old and established market - a
place entirely based on cost and price - taking it in another direction, and
bringing technology, craftsmanship and quality back in.
"Each and every SILCA component is designed for
beauty, function, strength, durability, and longevity before it is carefully
produced by hand to the highest standards. We take great pride in upholding the
100 year history of this brand.”
Joshua Poertner - SILCA
Silca’s approach is something we have
great affinity for and is an ethos we share at 700. Josh’s sentiments are
analogous to our own and we are extremely excited to be stocking Silca
in-depth, hoping to build that appreciation for quality with a new generation
of cycling aficionados
