Sarto ASOLA PLUS Premium Custom Carbon Road FRAME : MINIMAL

Season:2023

Brand:Sarto

Code:ASOLAPLUS

While not directly referenced as such, the Asola is the model in the Sarto range that best lends itself to climbing. This is largely thanks to the frame's improbable low weight - just 700g for a stock medium; but it is more than this. The Asola's ability to balance stiffness and its low weight with a sensible level of feedback that gives the rider just enough road detail but that does not result in nervous handling.

The Asola was awarded by “Tour” magazine as one of the best frames in the world for the incredible light weight, stiffness and comfort and it represents the ultimate expression of Sarto's construction technique.

The Disc version of this mountain goat evolved, like it's stable mates, into the integrated PLUS version with cabling and hoses routed through the cockpit.

The Asola Plus features relatively sober traditional round tube profiles at the front end, the aesthetic is understated and essential. The tubes are oversized (50mm) since they are exceptionally thin (down to 0.7mm in places) and this lends great stiffness and strength while minimising weight. The rear of the frame features boxed chainstays to deliver your power and sculpted seat-stays that temper the stiffness and lend an element of compliance to the frame.

Like the Seta, Sarto's most advanced frame to date, the Asola Plus is constructed from Toray M55J and M46J carbon, the best and stiffest carbon the market has to offer. This type of high modulus carbon fibre ensures great compressive and tensile strength.

Unlike most carbon frames that are constructed in moulds, Sarto's tube-to-tube construction and unique fabrication processes allow them to tailor their frames and their laminating processes allow Sarto to join the tubes more strongly creating a safe and efficient frame. Sarto have several steps in their production that separates them from the rest of their custom carbon fibre frame-manufacturing competitors. Besides a lamination process that maximises tube strength and durability, layers of Kevlar are blended in the lay-up to increase impact resistance too, making them not only exceptionally light but strong as well. This additional strength reduces the need for over-building and as a consequence, the Asola features impressive stiffness-to-weight numbers. The resin that remains in the joints ensures that the laminated frames are generally more comfortable than monocoque structures, maintaining their rigidity and performance.

While the Asola Plus rides like a lightweight bike, gracefully gliding up to speed when you apply the power; it remains incredibly well poised when you get out of the saddle and put the hammer down - be that in a sprint or powering up a short, sharp climb. This is unusual in the lightest bikes which have a tendency to fidget and drift beneath the rider when loaded and is testament to the stiffness of the Asola which holds its line, never leaking power.

Like the SETA PLUS, the ASOLA PLUS's stability is evident all the time, never bouncing around like so many other lightweight frames, the Asola conveys just the right amount of information about the road surface without ever being distracted by it, moving where you ask it with quiet confidence that creates a surefooted ride. This is particularly evident while descending and cornering too. The Asola's ability to isolate the rider from the road to just the right degree results in a bike that is suitable for the longest rides but that never bores in the same way as some endurance bikes can, subtly giving the rider critical feedback that allows them to push a little harder if they fancy it.

Integration on the Asola PLUS is marginally different from the likes of the Seta and Lampo Plus. Rather than a proprietary carbon stem - and in order to maintain the traditional, round aesthetic of the main tubeset - Sarto have chosen the Deda Superleggero stem that blends perfectly with the design of the frame. The fork is borrowed from the Seta+, while the handlebar can be freely chosen from either the Seta+ or Lampo+, all within the price.
As usual, several options are available for the BB shell and Sarto will guide on selection based on geometry.

  • A Sarto Bicycle is an exclusive and personalised product, hand-made in Italy and of the highest quality. Its value is derived from the materials used, the experience and the work of extreme precision and care carried out by a select collective of craftsmen.

Ultimately a Sarto bike is designed to be everything that you as an individual require and nothing you don't.
While every Sarto is available in stock sizes, I would emplore anyone looking to buy one (unless they are lucky enough to have a stock size fall kindly on their fit) to take advantage of the Made-to-Measure build. It is after all, the point.

Sarto have undergone several changes in the last 5 years, approaches to pricing and deliverables and even distribution have shifted.

This guide is to outline what you can expect with your new Sarto.

    FRAME KITS:

The bulk of Sarto frames are available as RIM or PLUS (Disc) variants

Each Sarto Frame is now supplied as a kit that includes :

Almost all aspects of Sarto's frames are customisable and are informed by the conversations that we and Sarto have with you. The lay-up for example, is driven by the feel that you prefer, your weight and the intended usage of the bike. Bottom bracket standard, length of chain stays and cable routing (among other things) can be chosen by you - with guidance from Sarto where appropriate.

    PAINT:

Sarto now paint all their frames in-house for improved quality control and a faster turnaround.
Each model is available in TWO Paint options that are applied to the frame designs that you see for each model on the Sarto website

While it is possible to have colours outside of their in-house selection, it is important to note that any changes outside the in-house parameters, will come at an additional cost and one that cannot be immediately quantified. Final pricing will be proffered once the design and colours are nailed down and before production begins.

    Professional Opinion
The Asola was a real surprise when I rode it. I tested it at under 6kg with a compliment of eTap and THM carbon components - yes, very lucky me!

Though I had previously ridden the exceptional Seta, a frame that weighs just 50g more, I was still convinced that a bike as light as the Asola would be skittish beneath me - I am no lightweight racing snake that lives to climb, just the opposite; more a widening sprinter that tolerates climbing in order to smash the downhill and get to the cake first!

I was seriously impressed. The Asola is resolute in its ride and has the stability of a bike that weighs significantly more. At first I was concerned about throwing all my weight into an out-of-the-saddle sprint but the more I rode it the more convinced I was that the Asola could handle it - and what do you know - it did. While I would likely buy a Seta or Raso, the Asola Plus would unquestionably be my choice if I was more of a climber or lived for the mountains. I can honestly say that I have never been so impressed by the confident handling offered by a bike as light as the Asola.
