2013 Giant Defy Composite 1 (Compact)

Season:2013

Brand:Giant

Code:3010322

The Giant Defy Composite uses Giant’s superb Torayca T600 carbon fibre and their endurance racing geometry to make a bike that will go the distance.

Minor tweaks to the 2013 frameset add to an already impressive line-up. The omission of the cosmetic 'checkered' final layer of carbon in the production process removes uneccessary weight and improves the stiffness-to-weight ratio. In addition the frames all now feature compatibility with Giant's Ride-Sense ANT+ data device which helps to eliminate sensor clutter on the frame.

Giant's own PowerCore bottom bracket and OverDrive head tube are common across the range and make for stiff pedalling efficiency and razor-sharp handling.

As with their TCR Composite Giant is attempting to re-educate the customer into the importance of good quality carbon fibre. Giant are very aware of the prevalence of cheap materials that are flooding the market and the misconception that a carbon bike is just that, when the opposite is true. A cheap carbon frame will be a colosal removal from a Giant ‘Advanced SL’ carbon for example. The £2500 frame price is not due to the fact that Giant is an expensive brand, or representative of a small brand with low production capacity. Rather Giant are a colossal company, the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world in fact, manufacturing for many other big names. The asking price is therefore representative of the countless hours put into both research and development as well as manufacturing, on top of the high quality materials that go into each frame.

As such Giant use a Torayca T600 fibre in all their Composite models. This they buy as a raw fibre from Torayca who manufacture for aerospace amongst other industries.  A good quality carbon such as this will be far less prone to failure, have a longer life due to fewer imperfections in the layering process as well as from a performance perspective being far lighter, stiffer and smoother than the competition.

As such in order to produce high quality carbon frames at a low quality price point both Giant and us the dealer, have altered the business model in order to educate the public as to the importance of this. For both us and Giant themselves this has meant a significant drop in profit margin, a drop that we are both happy to accept if it gets more people out on the roads.

The Giant Defy Composite then is an excellent bike for the rough British back roads. The frame whilst being designed for vertical compliance is one of the most laterally stiff we have ever used at this price point. This means that on top of being super smooth it will explode up the hills with a liveliness usually characteristic of a racing-style machine. This is borne out of very wide and flat tube shapes and Giant’s press fit BB86 bottom bracket set in a typically massive tube juncture. The excellent carbon gives the frame an amazing stiffness to weight ratio; again ideal for climbing and exploding out of the saddle to ascend the sudden inclines so common in our countryside. The slighlty longer wheelbase of the Defy offers the rider a stable platform that inspires confidence while descending and navigating the twisty back lanes.

The geometry is reasonably upright in order to give a comfortable all-day position and predictably smooth handling, aspects of which both the new and experienced rider will appreciate. You can never go wrong with a Giant bike; the Defy Composite least of all. Whether you want it to ride once a week or every day this is a solid machine that will respond to your every whim.

The Defy Composite 1 comes with a Shimano's Ultegra 10 speed groupset and Giant's P-SL1 wheels for accomplished, reliable all-round performance on this superb frame.
